I (Robert) first started shooting photography when I was about 18 years old. My father had some Henri Cartier Bresson photo books in the house and those were key in sparkling my interest for street photography. So I started shooting in the streets, candidly. I started shooting friends, and soon after I was shooting weddings.
How I got started, later Sunny joining me, and how we developed our style and vision to where we are today is a long story, but it is important to recognize that a big part of our inspiration both for our films and photography has come from that first interest of mine which was Street Photography. Even more, it’s important to mention that a huge part of it comes from the masters like Doisneau himself, or Henri Cartier Bresson. I can’t talk about our influences without talking about the humor of Elliott Erwitt; the freedom, breaking of rules and challenging of the aesthetics by Robert Frank; the attention to the ridiculous and surreal that we perceive as normal by Martin Parr; the color, composition, and layers of Alex Webb. We are fans of the spontaneous approach of Daniel Arnold. Constantine Manos, David Alan Harvey, Meyerowitz, Winogrand, Koudelka… they all have made work that inspire us in a way or another.
And perhaps more than the work itself, it’s the ideas. It’s the philosophy. It’s the motivations. It’s the why.
In the making of images, it’s just beautiful when the results reveal something of the one behind the camera. That is why we are so passionate about making work that resonate with us. Our work reflects our thoughts of photography, but also our thoughts about people, family, relationships, and weddings. Our clients trust us and trust our vision, so if what we do connects with us, it will totally connect with them. It truly makes the process so much more personal and honest.
